why are there so many different denominations within the christian faith? what is the purpose for this?

there are many different denominations because god's truth is being revealed in different ways to different people over time. the more time goes by, the more of the original understanding of the word of god is restored. eg for hundreds of years the teaching that you are saved by faith in jesus christ and not good works (or religious rituals/sacrifices) was lost. it is not some grand purpose but just human nature to cling only to what is already known. so when a truth about god from his word is revealed through a new denomination eg full immersion baptism (signifying dying to the world/self and living a new life in your spirit, sharing in christ's death and resurrection and washing your sins away) by the baptists, the catholics who practice baby baptism did not agree. ironically, baby baptism started because mothers were worried that their babies who died would not go to heaven - its not in the bible at all. the truth is anyone who cannot comprehend sin (too young, or mentally disabled etc) goes to heaven when they die. god is merciful and just.
